Land
To tackle the UK’s housing crisis requires land reform. Land accounts for 50 per cent of the UK’s net worth, double that of Germany, and higher than France, Canada, or Japan. The concentration of land ownership also keeps land scarce and expensive and makes acquisition difficult for building houses.
Making land easier to purchase for local councils and urban boroughs, in addition to exploring the opportunities of community-based land reform, could help to meet the growing housing demand by unlocking new spaces for housing and vital services.
